Things to do for teens and young adults

Hello all- My family has planned a trip to the Outer banks, specifically in Kill Devil Hills (in december). We have never been here before and us kids are a little concerned as what there is for us to do. Ages range from 15-22. Any suggestions for attractions/nightlife/activities that are available would be very much appreciated!

I haven%26#39;t been there in a number of years, but I went there every summer when I was a child! One big thing is the Wright Brothers memorial and museum in Kitty Hawk. Very cool!

I have been going to OBX since I was 2 years old and my sisters and I have always found plenty of ways to entertain ourselves. We are shoppers, so we usually spend half a day in the Gap outlet in Nags Head and spend the rest of the day going to other outlet shops, Belk, and the shops at Jockey%26#39;s Ridge. The shops at Jockeys Ridge have surf shops, a Kitty Hawk Kites (cool place to wander through), and other various stores that are cool to look around in.

We always talked about taking hang gliding lessions at Jockey%26#39;s Ridge (giant sand dune) but never actually did it. We always just ended up walking up Jokey%26#39;s Ridge.

We always enjoyed going to the NC Aqaurium in Manteo, its small but its still a fun place to visit.

If you don%26#39;t mind driving about 30 min. or so you can go to Corolla and go in the lighthouse, or see if you can find the wild ponies. The drive up there is pretty interesting because you go through places like Duck.

If your family allows and you have 4WD, you can take a drive on the beaches.

Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head are all right there together, and Manteo is pretty close too. If you are willing to go out and explore, you will find plenty of things to do.

Thanks so much for your input! It greatly helps!! Do you have any suggestions for things to do at night?

Here%26#39;s two things I found in the Outer Banks Visitors Guide for December: Roanoke Island Festival Park (living history museum, ship, encampment and art gallery) and NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island (sailing programs and other workshops). I%26#39;m not sure if the putt-putt golf courses, jet boat rentals, parasailing, hang-gliding, etc will be open or not. Beach bonfires, sparklers, search for crabs by flashlight are some things you can do at night. Your best bet is to go on-line to VGnet.com or Sunnydayguide.com, find their phone numbers and call the places you would like to visit. There are night clubs, bars, a comedy club and music showcase for the older gang. We always visit in August when everything is open, sorry I can%26#39;t help more. Anybody else?????

At night, chances are you won%26#39;t want to be outside too much. Most of those activities I think are starting to close (go carts, putt putt). There is a big movie theater. Lots of sports bars with tvs. There is a bowling alley in Nags Head. Most rentals have games, lots of tvs, dvds etc., which is what most people do any time of year in the evenings. Its not a big place for night life any time of the year, but especially winter. Are you going during the holidays? It is very crowded then, and there will likely be local events. Also, there is a YMCA that you can get a week pass for. Some rentals come with it.

Not sure what you are looking to do at night, i.e clubs, movie theaters, etc. As a previous poster said there is a bowling alley, and movie theater.

If you are looking for clubs there really isn%26#39;t a true teen club, most of the places are bar scenes and I am not sure what the cut off age is. For the older crowd check out the bar at Kelly%26#39;s they usually have a local band playing or a DJ. Port O Call is another good place to check out.

For the younger crowd there is a place that has teen nights during the fall and winter months, The Pitt check out their website for more information. http://www.pitsurf.com/

I think you will find OBX has plenty to offer, for a wide variety of ages.

Thanks so much for everyone who has provided input! I greatly appreciate it and have passed it all on to my family! It has been a great help for generating ideas! Thanks so much again!

We tried Hang Gliding lessons last summer at Jockey%26#39;s Ridge and had a blast. It does involve some running (down the dunes to catch the wind under your kite) and only one of the 4 of us really managed to get the hang of it. (It was his first time and he has continue with lessons and recently was able to fly for over 40 minutes!) It is a great way to burn up teenage energy. (Check with Kitty Hawk Kites to see how tall / old kids need to be to participate)

It is not at all dangerous - you have an instructor running down the hill with you the entire time. And don%26#39;t go if there isn%26#39;t much wind that day!
