Shells

I really like to snorkel from the beach looking for shells in the water, etc. Where is the best place to do this on Emerald Isle or is somewhere else clearer and better for this on the barrier island?

Several posts mention Shackleford Banks for shells, but I%26#39;m not sure where I%26#39;d go to be able to get there. Does anyone have a website link for more information?

How far is Shackleford Banks from EI?

Shells

The water isn%26#39;t good for snorkeling at all. Shells are spotty also.

Your best bet is to go to Beaufort and catch a ride to Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout National Seashore. Best shelling is at those locations. The Gulf Stream doesn%26#39;t get close enough to our coast for much clear water. I have heard that it seldom occurs for diving or snorkeling. Beaufort is a 30 or so minute drive from EI. You can also drive to Harker%26#39;s Island, another 30 minutes, and catch a closer ferry to Lookout.

historicbeaufort.com seems to cover the area well. Check the Insider%26#39;s Guide for ferries in Beaufort. I can%26#39;t remember the one we used, but the desk is at the end of Orange St along the waterfront in Beaufort.
