2 parents, 4 kids, heading south from Maine...hoping to have some relaxation and would love to stay in a really nice place on the water with an indoor pool...what else is there for the kids to do? I think we may be flying into Raleigh and staying one night to see a UNC basketball game..

what else? any fishing this time of year?

February vacation with kids

I%26#39;m a little confused - are you flying into Raleigh and driving to Maine and then back to Raleigh? Or flying into Maine and driving to Raleigh......?

February vacation with kids

we live in Maine. Are flying from NH to Raleigh from Sat 2/ 16 til Thurs 2/21. Have 4 boys ages 8-15. Suggestions? We are renting an SUV and expect to do some driving.

Thanks!!

OK- a little clearer now... so you are going to the coast? Staying the whole time there? Not the greatest time to be there. Could be great weather, could be horrible. . I%26#39;ll let those who fish advise you on that.

There are some good museums in Raleigh - our state museums are excellent as is Exloris ( they also have an IMAX theater). I would suggest those while you are in the area.

The Raleigh CVB has a good website with area events and activities.

So you want a hotel on the waterfront ( beach) with an indoor pool? And you want to stay in NC? OK- OBX people - help her out.

Just a thought...for OBX info you might post on the OBX forum so that OBX people who might only look there would find it. The city/smaller area forums are then also on the state forum so you cover a couple of bases. Say something in your subject line about the Outer Banks.

Agree about the weather. Perhaps you are not looking for warmth. Check weather.com, etc. You can also google average temps for areas. Realize current temps can be misleading if you only check once. For example, this week we had in So. Va. some wonderful temps in 70s or so. But that was a fluke and this weekend will be freezing and ice. You probably realize that just going south of NE doesn%26#39;t mean it%26#39;s summer-like.

But, like bud said, it can be nice at the OBX shore. There%26#39;s the gulfstream and I know people who play golf year round except for the occasional bad few days.

Now, as far as the indoor pool...haven%26#39;t stayed at any with an indoor pool.

Well, it turns out I did stay at places with indoor pools but never used them.

The Hampton Inn and Suites in Corolla...beautiful place even for the times you need to stay indoors. A newer place in a natural setting.

The Sanderling...hotel as well as houses. They had a multi milion dollar redo a year or two ago.

I didn%26#39;t mention the Rec Center for the Corolla Light community since I was thinking you wanted a place with the accommodation and pool together. But if you choose a condo, townhouse, house in Corolla Light you get a gorgeous rec center with pool. You%26#39;d have to check on whether it%26#39;s fully open in Feb. And while usually those homes require a week%26#39;s stay there are more mini vacations available in the off season.

If you are flying into Raleigh, I would suggest you go to Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington. OBX is about 5 hours from Raleigh and WB is only two. Also, given the possible very cold weather, because Wilmington is an actual functioning city, and not a resort area, there will be a lot to do even if the weather is bad. You could stay at the Holiday Inn Sunspree at the beach, which has an indoor pool and lots of other kid friendly things, or the Hilton on the riverfront in downtown Wilmington, where you can walk along the river, see shops and restaruants, etc. There are some tours in Wilmington, historical, carriage, ghost, etc. There is also the Battleship which is fun for kids of all ages. The beach will be beautiful, even if cold, if you decide to stay there. We have a place at WB and go down often for New Years and it is beatiful to walk the beach on Jan. 1. We have worn tee shirts to do it and frozen our buts off in heavy coats, but is always beautiful. One good thing about the Holiday Inn is that even if it is cold outside, there restaurant (which I would call ';fine'; not ';great';) has huge windows that look out on the beach.

One great day trip, as others have said, would be to go to Ft. Fischer and the Aquarium. If your kids are into history at all, they will love the fort. If they are not, it will still be fun to just run around the fort. A poster above says the aquarium is small, but I think it is plenty big, since the renovation, has a two story tank that they put divers in and give a talk, and tons of other tanks. Could take a couple hours to go through if you took your time. After that, we always like to time it so that we can catch the Ft. Fischer/Southport ferry and ride over to Southport for lunch. Check the times, as they are less oftern in the winter. Then we just come back to Wilmington by the quicker, land route and come over the huge bridge into Wilmington.
