Walking distance to beach and restaurants?

My family and our friends are looking to rent a house in the Nags Head area during the end of August. We will have 4 toddlers / babies in all and have found from previous vacations that the less time we have to spend packing up the kids and all their ';stuff'; in the car, the more enjoyable our vacation is. We%26#39;ve been reading the messages about the Outer Banks and it sounds like finding a home right on the water isn%26#39;t going to be a problem. What we%26#39;re trying to figure out though is where we have the greatest chance of being able to be on the water and at the same time be able to walk to a town/shopping/eating district (pushing strollers is much easier/faster than packing the car). Is there anywhere in the Outer Banks that this is possible? Price isn%26#39;t a big concern and our three top town picks right now are Duck, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Walking distance to beach and restaurants?

After a quick look thru the two OBX guides I have here at work I would suggest Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head. There%26#39;s a greater variety of restaurants and shoppes in these two towns. We%26#39;ve never stayed in the northern beaches, but most walks from oceanfront to the stores will be atleast 6 blocks. If you%26#39;re going to rent a beachfront home, I would choose one soon. Most premium summer rentals have already been picked. You%26#39;ll have to walk 3-4 blocks to get from an oceanfront home, across the Beach Road to the Bypass. A word of warning. The Bypass is six lanes wide and the intersections are not all controlled by lights. Plus, late August means very high temps and high humidity. Suggestion.... pick a house with a private pool. This will give the kids a chance to swim everyday, especially when the surf is rough.

PS. there are 3 rental companies that can supply you with baby equipt. That way you won%26#39;t have to bring it with you.
