Weather in May

We are planning a trip in mid May. Would the air and water temperature be too cold to enjoy a day at the beach or maybe a heated pool? Also, which beaches are better. Thanks!

Weather in May

The weather that time of year can be a crap shoot. The ocean will definately be too cold to swim in, but it should be okay to swim in a heated pool. The first time we were there, about five or six years ago, we rented a house without a heated pool for Memorial Day week. The weather was great. It was hot, hot, hot and the ocean was beautiful to swim in, as well as the pool. The next year we rented the same house for the same week and it was only around the very low 70%26#39;s during the day and cold at night. The ocean was freezing and it was even cold swimming in the unheated pool.

Go figure, you definately can%26#39;t predict Mother Nature.

Weather in May

I think a bit depends on which part of the Outer Banks you plan to visit.

Generally, I would think that the beaches south of Hatteras would tend to be warmer and less windy in mid May. I doubt that any of them would be good for swimming at that time of year.. Look at a map and you%26#39;ll see where the bank curves...

You%26#39;ll get lots of opinions about which beaches are best (!)...everyone seems to have their favorites.

The weather or I should say the temp in May is unpredictable at best. Since the water temp is still in the 60s then it will literally depend on which way the wind is blowing. If the winds blowing off the ocean it will be chilly....if it%26#39;s blowing of the land it will be warmer. Last May and the May before were both a little chilly. The ocean water temp will defintely be cold for you coming from FL - I don%26#39;t get in the water until the end of May and it%26#39;s still cold then.
