Christmas in the Smokies

I just realized that I posted this on the Gatlinburg forum, so here it is again (sorry for the repeat).

We are spending Christmas week in the Smokies ~ many visits during the summer, but our first winter trip!!

I understand that many roads will be closed...seems that Newfound Gap and Little River should be open....so what can we really see and do in the Park? Do you think Cades Cove will be open? Cataloochee? Will there be any hiking trails ';open';?

We are staying on the Bryson City side.

Any information/suggestions will be very appreciated!

Cataloochee was opened for the season around Thanksgiving. We have a place in Robbinsville and visit every 6 weeks. We have spent many winters there and most of the roads will be open.

Cataloochee was alot of fun if you%26#39;re looking for some skiing.

There are other ski areas opening up this week as well.

Froggy,

There is Cataloochee Ski Area near Ghost Town in Maggie Valley, and Cataloochee which is part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This is the area where the elk can be seen up close.

It%26#39;s a difficult drive to see the elk, mostly a one-lane gravel road that turns sharply. I%26#39;ve only been there a couple times, but I%26#39;ve never seen the road closed.

The entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway close occasionally due to ice in the winter.

Have a great trip!
