Walking distance to food and beach possible in OBX?

My family and our friends are looking to rent a house in the Nags Head area during the end of August. We will have 4 toddlers / babies in all and have found from previous vacations that the less time we have to spend packing up the kids and all their ';stuff'; in the car, the more enjoyable our vacation is. We%26#39;ve been reading the messages about the Outer Banks and it sounds like finding a home right on the water isn%26#39;t going to be a problem. What we%26#39;re trying to figure out though is where we have the greatest chance of being able to be on the water and at the same time be able to walk to a town/shopping/eating district (pushing strollers is much easier/faster than packing the car). Is there anywhere in the Outer Banks that this is possible? Price isn%26#39;t a big concern and our three top town picks right now are Duck, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Kitty Hawk or Nags head north of mile post 19 may work for you but most of your big restaurants are on or across the Highway so walking isn’t always an option , every thing is pretty much spread out down there I usually go threw a tank of gas just going to places.

You might like this site if you have never been there before

I%26#39;d say Kitty Hawk around MP 1%26amp;2 or MP4 and Nags Head between MP 10.5 %26amp; 14. is probably your best bet.

How about Duck? I%26#39;ve heard that the village is quite nice and the beaches are less crowded?

Duck is very nice. Lots of walkability there, although it will depend on where your house is situated. Check any of the rental agency websites for maps to determine how close you are to the many restaurants and shops in Duck.

Corolla also can be walkable. Again, it depends on where your home is located. If you rent in the Buck Island development or the southern portion of Whalehead you can walk to the grovery store, shops, movies and restaurants. Also, the Corolla Light development has it%26#39;s own set of shops/restaurants as well.

Another suggestion I would make would be to get a house with a pool. It%26#39;s great to have when some of your little ones are napping but the older toddlers or adults want to enjoy the pool.

I agree with finding a home with a pool or at least one that includes a community pool.

The water can be very rough with currents and rips and sudden drop offs close to shore. The pool is a nice alternative on days the surf is up or when the beach is closed to swimming.

We LOVE Duck and have been going for many years. There are quite a few really good eating places there too. Four Seasons, Sea Pines, %26amp; Duck Landing have worked well for us.

We always stay oceanfront in Kill devil hills area. Many restaurants in this area.

Walking to restaurants on the OBX is not always easy as there are at last 1, and soemtimes 2 major roads to cross to get to most restaurants. If you stay in the Kill Devil Hills area, especially around milepost 9-10.5, there are several options for walking that only require crossing 1 road-and the smaller 1 at that! Kitty Hawk has some nice places to eat near the roads, but there is no walking path there, and navigating with a stroller would be difficult-especially at night. Staying in Nags Head at aroung milepost 10.5 to 12 will give you some dining options within walking distance of rental homes, but do keep in mind that these ';walks'; may be up to 1/2 mile. Ducvk, and the northern beaches will provide some good options for walking to restaurants, but these homes will not be ocean front, as there is a large distance between the ocean, and the road in a lot of the northern areas. I think to really enjoy the area, it may require more driving than you had originally hoped.

I agree with previous posters about location. Also, were you thinking about an oceanfront house? If so, definately book now. Our house in South Nags Head is oceanside and its already rented 8 weeks. There is really no town area, but make sure to stay on the beach road if you are planning to walk. There are a few small grocery stores on the beach road and lots of semi-oceanfront restaurants. You can search the restaurants, find the milepost location, then try and locate a house near that milepost. Here are a few restaurants on the beach road: Sam %26amp; Omies, The Dunes, Owens, The Red Drum, Goombays, Tortugas Lie, Red Drum, Awful Arthurs. If you look at a close in satellite site of the area, you%26#39;ll get an idea of how businesses and houses are laid out.

Go to Corolla Light -- Much better than Nags Head with everything you are looking for but less crowds and wider beaches!
