Hiking safely around Brevard and Hendersonville

I am planning to hike in the area of Pisgah National Forest this weekend. We are two hikers who hiked in many places around the world and never had any problem but what happened to two elderly hikers makes me think we may need to take some additional steps to assure our safety. Cell phones seems useless since this elderly couple tried to use it and didn%26#39;t get a connection. Can any fellow hikers and/or local residents suggest what steps to take for safe hiking and avoid a terrible outcome of being killed? Any news whether the second hiker%26#39;s body was ever found?

We hike there occasionally and never felt threatened. It%26#39;s not the place that%26#39;s dangerous- it%26#39;s society that%26#39;s dangerous. It could have happened anywhere. If you feel vulnerable, carry pepper spray. Cell phones do work in much of the Pisgah area - but there are some empty areas where you can%26#39;t connect. One of the things that made them vulnerable was that they were elderly - unfortunate for sure. I can bet there%26#39;s an enhanced security presence in that region right now and it%26#39;s probably one of the most secure places to hike in the country !.

I make decisions about these things with wisdom...and with faith. I take precautions, trust God, and go enjoy myself. The Pisgah Forest is beautiful. I hope you enjoy it.

Best wishes.

no news on the gentleman so far - it is believed he was kidnapped and his ATM card was used in TN.

What a pity when a person is afraid to go on a hike in a beautiful place like Pisgah National Forest. What is this world coming too. It was probably some druggies who needed some cash for a fix. I hope they catch them and give them the death pentaly. Only way you can be safe is carry heat. I really doubt you have anything to worry about. Go on the hike and enjoy the beauty mother nature has made.

My son is thinking about stopping on his way, today, in Brevard to do a side hike, during his trip home. Any suggestions on a trail?

Hmm! Toady? It is raining. Many hiking trails but not in thos weather
