Life in Southport NC?

We are going to Southport to look at real estate for a year round home. We live on Cape Cod currently so we know what summer does to a beach area but can someone tell us what living there year round is like. Does it become a ghost town, are there a lot of shops that close, people that leave? The main reason for considering it is we have been told it has a nice small town community feel and it has very mild winters! That%26#39;s what we are looking for, and after living in New England all our lives, mild winters is our dream. Any thoughts to give us and an idea as to what to expect, thanks!

Life in Southport NC?

There are locals who live there year-round....2000 census marks almost 2400 residents. There%26#39;s even a hospital in town...as well as three schools (one elem, middle %26amp; high, each). And I%26#39;ve heard several retirement communities are located in the vicinity.

Remember, Southport is not actually a beach town...it%26#39;s a port town. So while tourism is a mainstay there, it%26#39;s not the only thing.

As far as the shops and restaurants closing in the winter, I can%26#39;t tell you for sure...but there%26#39;s surely going to be enough staying open to provide for the local populace. Even if most do, Wilmington is not too far away and is a bustling, year-round city.

Life in Southport NC?

I lived in Southport several years ago and did not like it at all. The restaurants closed early in the winter months and once the summer crowd left it was deserted. As for any shopping, eating out, etc you will need to go to Wilmington or into SC for any of that. The hospital is nothing to write home about...the doctors came out of Wilmington mostly and came to Southport as a satellite office. The only advantage was the surgery was done local, but the visits were back and forth to Wilmington....so esentially there was no advantage since we had to commute.

Some people love Southport...I just happen to find it too laid back with limited access to things I enjoy doing or having at my finger tips.

I am 26 years old and have been going to long beach (which is the town next to southport and i have family that live in southport) but at the age i am right now i would have to say making a prem home in southport may not be the best idea. When the summer season is around all the resturants are open but as soon as Sept hits it really is a ghost town you have to call and see what is open and what is not open. And living in southport is beautiful but why licve there is there are many islands around that can give oyu that beach feeling. SOuthport does not have a beach section you just cant grab your chair and sit on the beach because there is no beach. But you can drive about 15 mins to get to one. Hope this was help full
