We took the advice given and booked the downtown Sheraton for our one night getaway. Thanks to all that helped with that! We will be attending a concert at Memorial Hall. That leads me to wondering where we should eat that would be walking distance from the hotel. We aren%26#39;t really looking for a particular type of food just a good quality place that we can eat and have a few drinks and will keep us in walking distance of the hotel/concert venue.

If you will be there during lunch and want to try some NC BBQ, try Clyde Coopers BBQ (109 E Davie St). For some drinks, there are some local music dives close to the Sheraton, The Pourhouse (224 S Blount St, has a decent tap selection and local bands), Lincoln Theatre (126 E Cabarrus St), Tir Na Nog (218 S Blount St, Irish pub, decent food), Duck and Dumpling (222 S Blount St, good Asian food, more upscale than the others) and Cafe Luna, italian food, decent, some people love it some people dont care for it.

There%26#39;s a good deal within walking from the downtown Sheraton %26amp; Memorial Auditorium.

Yancey%26#39;s, a cajun/southern fare place with live music is across Fayetteville Street from the hotel. Further up Fayetteville Street is another cajun/creole placed called The Big Easy. Also up Fayetteville Street is Crema for tasty ice cream %26amp; coffee.

A couple blocks east is the Moore Square/City Market district with several great offerings. Duck %26amp; Dumpling (pan-Asian), Cafe Luna (Italian), Vic%26#39;s (Italian), Mo%26#39;s (eclectic American), Wild Ginger (Thai %26amp; sushi), Tony%26#39;s Winebar, and Fins (fancy seafood) are among the notable offerings in that area.

To the north/northeast of the hotel, there%26#39;s Riviera for really good Meditteranean food. Also nearby is Raleigh Times, a really popular pub...and Morning Times which is probably one of the best coffee houses around.

To the west of the hotel, there%26#39;s a good few offerings in the Warehouse District (although it%26#39;s more known for its nightclubs). Nana%26#39;s Chophouse has steaks and such...and Humble Pie is known for great tapas (as well as the city%26#39;s best Sunday Brunch IMO). Also the Borough, which is a nice neighborhood bar/pub.

Outer Banks Beach Club I & II

We have the opportunity to make reservations at the Outer Banks Beach Club in mid September. Has anyone stayed there recently? I understand that one of the units is on the beach and the other is across the street. Could you tell me which is which? Also I am interested in the cleanliness, general upkeep of the rooms and whether this property is in a good location on the beach. What is the weather like in mid September? Anything else we should be aware of? Thanks for any help with these many questions.

Just returned from OBX Beach Club I a couple of days ago. We have been owners there for about 5 years. Their are units on the beach, just back from the beach, and some of the units in Beach Club II are across the street from the beach. Units on the first floor have views of the dunes, some have ocean views, not all because the dunes block the view. The rooms and the resort in general are kept in very good repair. Not an easy task on the Outer Banks due to sometimes harsh weather that settles in there. September is probably one of the best times to visit. We also own a rental home in Nags Head and sometimes go down there in the off season. September should still be warm enough to swim in the surf , but you will not be bothered by large crowds of tourists. Have a great time!.............Jim from CT

I don%26#39;t think the Zevely Inn is a bad place, but the service can be lacking. The location is the absolute best for visiting Old Salem, the rooms are beautifully decorated in period reproductions, and you really get the feel of living in Old Salem. I think the problem that most people have, which is a fair criticism, is that the service can be lacking. The staff who is there when the owners are out are well meaning and nice but not well trained to do much but clean rooms. The room reservations are taken in a big book and while the owners understand the notations, the cleaning staff, who are sometimes left to man the hotel alone don%26#39;t and can make mistakes. If you acknowledge that limitation and wait for the owners get back to make any big requests you should be fine, although you may not want to bother. I don%26#39;t find the service to be worse than what is typical in a generic large hotel chain, but it is not what most people come to expect of bed and breakfasts.

I don%26#39;t personally care for the Brookstown, but there are no major problems with it and it depends on your personal tastes.

The Zevely staff are wonderful! My husband and I stay there every 3-4 months, as our son is attending NCSA. They have always been helpful and kind. The house is 150 years old, so floors will creak and things do break. We love old homes however, and realize that this just comes with the territory. I%26#39;ve noticed that some of the people that post these nasty reviews just seem to want to stir trouble or expect the Hilton. I%26#39;d prefer the friendliness of the ATZ any day. Stay, you%26#39;ll enjoy!

My choice is the Henry Shaffner House B%26amp;B. Just check out their reviews. My first stay was amazing. I can%26#39;t say enough. The place is a 100 year old mansion. The wiring and plumbing are totally updated but the old charm has not been compromised. The rooms at the Zevely are small and outdated and the Brookstown is not an old house, but an old mill.

Possible Transfer to Charlotte

I was just informed by my husband that we need to go to Charlotte next weekend, November 4-8 to check out Charlotte for a possible move. We have never been to Charlotte and I need some suggestions. We will try to hook up with a local realtor but I need suggestions on what areas to look at for living, it has to be easy to get to the airport. We are empty nesters so we are open to most anything. We are from the Midwest so this would be a new adventure for us. We also need suggestions on where to stay when we are there and possible dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I%26#39;d love any and all input.

Gotta%26#39; warn you, since your post is about relo and not travel, it might get shut down quickly. Before it does...

We live in super-south Charlotte a bit farther from the Ballantyne area. Is a new area, tons of restaurants, very safe, but A LOT of kids, everywhere. A lot of people look at the York County areas of SC due to tax reasons. It honestly depends on where your husband is going to be posted. If he is going to be in center city, you may want to look downtown or not too far from downtown as we have some traffic problems. There are a lot of up and coming areas there and he%26#39;d be closer to the office. I know people who live on the north side of town, I%26#39;m just not into it, you hear a bit too much about crime up there. Maybe someone on the board who lives up there can set me straight on where to look. Southwest Charlotte has some buzz as well, and if you aren%26#39;t concerned about schools, might be a good fit for you. Same with Tega Cay, SC.

If you are saying that you need to live somewhere close to the airport, your options are limited. The areas right near the airport are not good. However, many locations in/around the city are a 15-30 minute drive to/fro the airport depending on the time of day.

My personal suggestion, check Park Rd. (heading towards the suburbs/Carmel Rd., not the city) is an established area, Pineville (closer to Providence Rd. side), South Park, Ballantyne, south of Ballantyne (down Johnston Rd. or around Rea Rd.) and even into Marvin/Weddington/Ft. Mill area (is more rural, we love it out there) as well as Tega Cay and Baxter areas.

As far as places to stay, if his company is paying for it, you could stay at the posh Ballantyne Resort, or find somewhere in South Park. If you need more info, feel free to write me off line. Good luck!

Possible Transfer to Charlotte

Where will your husband be working. If he is uptown or SouthPark I would stay away from areas that require getting on the interstates during commuting hours. I agree with the other post about the Park Road Area. I happen to live off Park Road. My hubby works for a bank uptown and can be at his desk in 20 minutes. There are all price ranges from $200K to $1 million off Park Rd. It%26#39;s very near SouthPark and Carolina Place malls. You can%26#39;t beat it.

The two closest hotels to the high school are in downtown Chapel Hill: The Franklin and The Carolina Inn. Both are real nice...but also may be pricey, depending on your budget. If so, then there are some chain hotels further eastwards on US Hwy 15/501. Those would include a Days Inn, Red Roof Inn, Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, etc.

Yes the main airport for the area is Raleigh/Durham International. It%26#39;s about 20-25 minutes down I-40.

Hello: I have read the forums here and you all seem like such helpful people.

We are looking at hotels for the May race weekend for 2008 and looking to find good hotels that are reasonable so we have some funds left to enjoy our time at the races.

I have been looking at the Best Westerns at 242 E Woodlawn Road, and 2625 Little Rock Road, and the one at 2501 Sardis Road.

Can you guys tell me if any of these are good hotels and are in safe areas. These Best Westerns all seem like good rates but I have no idea about the areas in the Charlotte area.

I am open to any other suggestions if you have any.

it may be too late for you, but the Weir-Jordan House in downtown Greensboro is VERY reasonable. It%26#39;s on the national register of historic places and is home to the Women%26#39;s Club and other civic groups. They have an on-site caterer who makes everything from scratch - no Sam%26#39;s Club food! There is a huge front room with a fair amount of seating (about 70 at tables, more if no tables) and the chairs and tables are included in the rental price. Additional rooms allow for great traffic flow in the facility. Their phone is 272-1337.

I was recently informed of a review posted on this website under The Monte Vista Hotel%26#39;s ratings that described a less-than-stellar experience that someone from Greensboro had at my store. For the record, the person (Josh) described there was fired long before I ever got wind of this complaint because, as you can imagine, this was not the only negative comment ever made about him. Unfortunately, Josh poured beautiful latte art rosettas but couldn%26#39;t control his mouth or get the chip off his shoulder. I sincerely hope this experience doesn%26#39;t deter others from trying our coffee next time they%26#39;re visiting the beautiful town of Black Mountain - we%26#39;ve been so successful that we just opened our second location in downtown Asheville. I live in Black Mountain and I can guarantee you Josh was not the only one to offer a smart remark and bad service on a regular basis. My friends and I agree your business has the rudest wait staff I have ever encountered and that is pretty bad since I moved here from Philadelphia. We were thrilled when the new coffee shop opened around the corner with a very friendly staff. Clean house!! There is now competition in the area.

Wow, how different peoples experiences can be. I go in to Dripolator and the staff are always pleasant and I see moms and kids, students, professors, people with lap tops...everyone looking happy and relaxed.

I make it a point to visit The Dripolator on every visit to or through this area. The place is perfect! Delicious coffees served by well trained and courteous staff members in a warm inviting setting, located in a scenic mountain town. It doesn%26#39;t get any better. I met Amy on one visit and she graciously made me a capuccino that was delicious.

If I didn%26#39;t live 3 hours away, I%26#39;d be a ';regular'; For now I%26#39;ll happily remain a regular visitor.

Maybe I%26#39;ll drive out there this weekend!

Well I am posting because, I have been heading to the Dripolator now almost every day now for just under 2 months. I live in Swannanoa, so I visit both Black Mtn and Asheville.Only recently have I been stopping in every day. I enjoy the feeling of both places while the service is by far better in Blk Mtn. This past summer the Asheville shop got to be way to hot to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee on many days. So today I stoped in on the asheville store. I have a laptop and used to enjoy myself with a good cup of coffee and some down time to check some e-mail ebay etc. Well today I scooped up my favorite seat, ordered my coffee and dessert, sat down turned on my laptop and saw that my battery was low I grabed my cord went to the wall where I knew there was a plug and saw a white plug protector on the plug. I went up asked the lady at the counter about it she told me that it was done to not let people feel like staying all day for just a cup of coffee. While I understand the issue of having people camp out there I also know that I come spend good money on 4.00 slices of desserts and deal with no refils pay for every cup and deal with the refill price in Blk Mtn being .50 and 1.00 in Asheville. I just am not sure if I can continue to visit the Dripolator, if as I looked around the plugs all aroud were all covered even the most handy one up front at the sitting booths along the windows. WOW what a welcome..... made to feel like give us your money now get out. its a coffee house with free wi-fi that they do not want the customers to use. the wi-fi was down over the past weekend and there was even a attitude dripping sign explaning how the wi-fi was down and how it was not their fault but the fault of Bellsouth. Again, not a welcoming nice friendly attitude. I so hate to stop going to the Dripolator but seem to be given no other choice ..because the coffee and desserts are excellent. but the over all attitude of the mainly Asheville store is so poor, it taints my visits to a much nicer shop in Blk Mtn. I wish you continued success, You must work on the Asheville Store the service there has hurt your business .

We just spent a week in Black Mountain and visited The Dripolator several times -- morning coffee, evening dessert %26amp; latte, coffee bean pickup. The staff was courteous and friendly. The atomosphere was homey. The coffee was good. What a great little place -- such a refreshing little find in the middle of the mountains. And the dessert -- YUMMO -- there were different choices throughout the week and everything looked freshly baked. We look forward to the next visit!

I also just returned from a weekend in Black Mountain and loved the Dripolater - what a nice break from the normal Starbucks! The atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxed, and the fruit smoothies were perfect for such a hot weekend. I also noticed that there were no ';protectors'; on the outlets, and several folks had their laptops plugged in (in reponse to the prior post). I would definitely visit the Dripolater and Black Mountain again!

Thanksgiving with late 20 somethings

I need help. We are driving 15 hours to stay with our homebody cousins that live in Charlotte for Thanksgiving. We are all in our mid to late 20%26#39;s and no kids! We aren%26#39;t totally into the bar scene everynight but we would like to have some fun and check out some cool sites as this will be our first time to the east coast. We will be in town for 6 days and we are going to the Carolina Panthers game on sunday. Please help us fill in the rest of our week and help us convince our cousins that Charlotte isn%26#39;t a boring place to live and convince us that we didn%26#39;t waste our time driving! Do your cousins live near downtown (or ';uptown'; as locals strangely call it) or are they in the hinterlands? You may want to cab it.

Va- years ago the Charlotte Chamber chided all of us for saying ';downtown'; - they thought the connotation was too negative! LOL. So they launched this huge move to say ';uptown';. I think now they want to call it ';center city';. When I was growing up and took the bus, we interchanged the terms - going uptown, downtown, and TO town. Best wishes.

I had always wondered where that came from. From someone from ';out of town';, I always thought it sounded kinda snooty. Just one man%26#39;s opinion.

I%26#39;m around your age group and can%26#39;t say I have a lot of recommendations. I love the outdoors and there are a lot of good places here to check out, the Whitewater Center, Raptor Center, a lot of local greenway%26#39;s and trails. I don%26#39;t drink, so I could care less about the bar scene here. There are a few concert venues in town, could check their schedule on the Creative Loafing site that is linked in the above post to see who is playing. A lot of people like the Plaza-Midwood area, is a joint there called The Penguin which was featured on Diners and Dives, has a lot of charm. If you do go that way, check out the Common Market. Could also go to NoDa, the arts district, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens or check out the huge CD selection at Manifest Records on South Blvd.

It is a shame you are driving so far though for your first trip to the east coast. Would have recommended you go a bit further north to DC if you want more excitement and six jam packed days (I%26#39;m biased since I%26#39;m from that area), as six days in Charlotte is just a long time.

You could take a day/overnight trip to Charleston, SC (a fun town) or make the four hour drive down to Atlanta or drive over to the mountains to see the trees change colors. I would recommend you plan one or two day trips, I know there have been arguments on this site, but six days in Charlotte is going to have you running out of things to do here quick, at least in my opinion. I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll get a lot of smack for saying that.

Whatever you decide, safe travels!

I am your age and I would suggest to head uptown at least at one poing during your stay, to check out the bars/restaurants. You can park in the parking deck on 7th street, and walk to many, many cool places. Everything from pubs to clubs, and everything in between. It can be a fun city at night, especially on the weekends! =)

We stayed at the Country Inn %26amp; Suites in Ashville %26amp; it was very nice with a great breakfast. After that experience we then booked the Country Inn %26amp; Suites in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. It was not a good hotel. Very dirty, I would not even get in the tub. The food was not edible. They had taken an older hotel %26amp; turned it into a Country Inn.

I would ask how old this hotel is %26amp; if it isn%26#39;t brand new I would look around at other options.

The Country Inn %26amp; Suites in Boone was built in 2006.

My family and I are planning a trip to Holden Beach, North Carolina. We would be most appreciative of any information anyone may be able to provide regarding beach house rentals.

We are a family of two adults and two young children. We would be able to fit in a two bedroom house and are used to sharing a bathroom.

Additionally, we may meet up with another family of four, in which case we would need four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Holden Beach rental information

We own a beach house on Holden Beach and love spending time there. Holden Beach has become very popular over the past few years, so rental houses get booked up very fast; between our family%26#39;s use dates and rentals; our house is already booked solid into the fall. I%26#39;d suggest finding something and booking it ASAP. Here%26#39;s the websites of the main rental companies on Holden Beach. Alan Holden realty manages our house for us, but all are good companies and all offer nice homes. www.holden-beach.com ; www.coastalvacationresorts.com ; hobbsrealty.com You can view the homes that are available, some have indoor pictures as well. The west side of the island has the best beaches, the east side has some erosion problems. The addresses of the homes say east or west; I%26#39;d look for something at or beyond the 300 block on the west side.

not enough is said on these forums about how beautiful the beach is in the fall or winter months. holden beach is a paradise, especially attracrive in the off season with the affordable rates. enjoy!!!!!

WF med school interview

Hey, I am interviewing in early Dec at the med school at WF and I was thinking about coming down a couple of days early to get a feel for this town.

Is it possible to get around town without a car? Also, how many days would you recommend that I spend here? I am thinking along the lines of 3 nights, two full days (not including interview days).

Also feel free to throw in any random tips you may have. :)

You can get around Winston Salem with out a car pretty good. They have the bus and cabs. 3 nights will give you the slight feel for the city.

If you have never been to Winston Salem then you should go to Old Salem and walk around and see all of the shops down there.

To expand on the comment by EagleRidge - Old Salem was a community set up by the Moravians and some of the original buildings are open to the public with costumed interpreters. The Decorative Arts and Children%26#39;s Museums, also in Old Salem, are also worth a visit.

Truthispretty, my wife is a resident at WFBMC and we were able to tour Winston in roughly 2 days time (interview day included). I would recommend having a car as you can get around from different parts of the city--downtown, Buena Vista, Ardmore (where the hospital is located), Hanes Mall Blvd., etc--without relying on public transportation. Wake is not within walking distance to Baptist hospital. But I%26#39;m pretty sure the med school will have 3rd and 4th year students and residents that will be on hand to entertain and guide you around town.

Looking for Great hotel for weekend in WS

I will be visiting Winston Salem for a Allstar cheer competiton in Nov and looking for a nice clean hotel that offers breakfast near LJVM Coliseum or near Hanes Mall. I%26#39;ve read so many horrible reviews on so many hotels in winston salem. Can any of the locasl recommend a good place to stay for a weekend???

Looking for Great hotel for weekend in WS

My husband I an just visited Winston Salem for two nights last week. We stayed at the Brookstown Inn which is located just south of downtown. Unfortunately, I don%26#39;t know the exact proximity to the Coliseum or the mall, but I don%26#39;t believe the mall is more than a 5-10 minute drive away. Check out all of the reviews on the Brookstown Inn in trip advisor. They are almost all 4 or 5 stars.

We enjoyed the continential breakfast which included fruit, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, breads and patries, hard boiled eggs, and some sort of packaged sausage biscuits which an be heated up in the microwave.

They also offer wine and cheese at 6:00 and cookies and milk in the evening. We were able to enjoy the wine and cheese, but missed the cookies and milk.

We stayed here for a weekend. We now live in WS. Cheap and simple, easy to get around. Easy on and off from 52, just north of downtown (less than 2-3 min). Less than 10 min from the mall area. 52 S to 40 W.

Hotel is simple and cheap. Has good breakfast for free. Outside pool. Nothing really fancy, but a nice place to stay.

Looking for a hotel. attending a wedding w/ reception at the Old Town country club in a couple monts, and would like the closest possible hotel (just in case we end up walking back that night). Also looking for a deal, possibly with AAA or gov%26#39;t/military rates, but I would splurge if it looked worthwhile. Was wondering if perhaps it would be more worth it to stay downtown and go out post-reception to some bars? I%26#39;ve never been to winston salem, and am not sure of the atmosphere on weekends. Unless there is a B%26amp;B I dont know about, there is nothing ';walking distance from that country club';. I would really recommend you find

a hotel downtown, there are some nice pockets of resturants

there.

I like the Fairfield Inn. Nothing fancy but Pool, hot tub, small work out room, nice breakfast, clean, rates are about $79.00. Nearer to Hanes Mall than Wake. Wake is about a 10 minute drive. Good luck

I have stayed at the La Quinta at the corner of Stratford Rd. and Hanes Mall Blvd....its was above-average but not great. Good location, decent service, nothing too fancy and affordable. The reason we stayed is they are pet-friendly. If you want somewhere really nice to stay downtown....I would recommend the Marriott downtown!

Christmas Eve at Charlotte airport

My sister is flying into Charlotte Christmas Eve at 15.40 from the UK to connect with my next flight to Orlando at 17.45.

What can I expect and any trip? Worried about enough time between flights.

First trip to US no idea what to expect.

Christmas Eve is typically a light travel time at CLT. Unless the flight is excessively late, no problem with connections. CLT is efficient. Best wishes.

Like Bud said, that should be plenty of time, unless there are delays coming in from the UK. The Charlotte airport has 5 Terminals that branch out from the main Terminal. There are no trains or trams and not like a Chicago or NY, is moderately sized. Safe travels!

We visited Chimney Rock Park during this past summer. It was VERY hot, so we chose the Hickory Nut Falls Trail. The trail was pretty easy and really didn%26#39;t take a lot of time. It%26#39;s a nice trail for families with young children, and the bonus was getting to put your feet in at the falls. The trail is partially shaded. Due to the drought, the falls weren%26#39;t flowing a whole lot. It might be better now.

When are you planning to visit? Are you an avid hiker? We didn%26#39;t hike it, but the Skyline trail looks a bit more challenging, so you might try that one if you don%26#39;t mind a better workout. If you don%26#39;t have a lot of time to spend, you might want to do the Hickory Nut Falls one. We did it in about an hour. We didn%26#39;t have loads of time, and due to the heat, we chose Hickory Nut. We have a 9 year old, and the best part for her was the natural swimming hole at the end. :)
