Northern Beaches - Any Preference?

We have never been to the outer banks and are looking to rent a vacation home the first week of June. Many of the homes look nice, but we don%26#39;t know if one area is more or less preferred than others. Does it matter if we are in Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Southern Shores, Duck, etc.? I suppose nearness to restaurants and the sights would be a consideration. What about traffic congestion? Is it the same everywhere in the northern beaches area?

Northern Beaches - Any Preference?

It all depends on what you are looking for. More restaurants, shops, mini golf, bars, etc. Then I would suggest you stay in the Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head area.

If you are looking for a more quaint, small town feel then Duck and areas further north are what you are looking for. Duck is nice quiet area, with some very nice shops and restaurants.

It will also depend on what you want to do. Are you planning to do day trips to see Cape Hatteras, Manteo (NC Aquarium, Lost Colony etc.), or the lighthouse at Corolla? Then I would suggest you stay in Nags Head because that would give you an easier drive to all these locations.

Traffic/congestion can be a pain in OBX, but the first week of June should not be to bad because schools are still in session, so its not full tourist season.

The road to Duck and north is a 2 lane highway, the main road south, to Nags Head, is a 4 lane highway, with stoplights.

Hope this helps!

Northern Beaches - Any Preference?

We have never been to the Outer Banks either and are planning our trip for 2 weeks in the end of June. Is Salvo a nice area to stay in? Thanks!

TravelingHokies,

Thanks for the information. That gives me a much better idea of what to expect.

pearle1,

I have never stayed in Salvo, if we go down that far we stay on Ocracoke Island. My in-laws stayed in that area last year and said Salvo is a nice family area, great beach, and fishing. The only problem they had were things were closed for the filming of ';Nights in Rodanthe';.

Sorry I can%26#39;t be of more help. I would post a question on the Outer Banks forum to get more information.Good luck!

Traffic is an issue on check in/out days for all of the north beaches and really all of the OBX...Sat and Sun.

All of the other towns you mentioned are very nice, you really can%26#39;t go wrong. It just depends what you%26#39;re looking for. Are you looking to be in the middle of development? That would be Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk. There all on the big road which means that%26#39;s where most of the commercial development is. If you are looking for something that%26#39;s a little less commercialized Southern Shores is great and only a short drive to all restaurants and sights...houses are on larger lots than those in NH, KDH, and KH. Duck is very nice as the village of duck is acsessible by foot or bike from rentals. The town itself has special events every week in the park - concerts and the like.

HTH, let me know if you have any other questions.
