pier fishing

we%26#39;re planning a summer trip to OBX and trying to decide which area to rent a house..... the guys will want to fish everyday so it%26#39;s probably best for us to find a home within walking distance to a pier (or right next to!!!). is nags head good for fishing (crowded, private, or are one of the other areas in OBX better?)

any recommendations on which pier is better than others? thnx!

There are very few piers left in OBX, due to hurricanes, development, etc. Avalon is one I hear about a lot. We always surf fish. Be sure the guys know they have to have a fishing license to fish in NC, laws just changed on that, but its not a big deal you can buy a 10 day pass for $10. Most bait shops sell those, and I would think the fishing piers would too. If the guys are interested they could charter a boat for the day out of Orgeon Inlet. Check out this: website:http://www.outerbanksfishing.com/index.htm

Personally, I think Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck, etc. are way to crowded during the summer season. I much prefer those areas after labor day to before Memorial day. During the summer months We prefer Hatteras or Ocracoke, esp. for fishing.

Good luck, no matter where you vacation it will be great.

thanks travelinghokies.... i think you%26#39;re right. with that i%26#39;ve been reading the nags head area seems too crowded for what we%26#39;re looking for. the guys want to fish in a quiet area and all i really want is the beach/pool for the kids and i. how long does it take you to get down to the hatteras area or ocracoke (i read that%26#39;s rates one of the top 10 us beaches!!!) in the summer once you get into obx.... we%26#39;re traveling with toddlers and the shorter the drive the better. just curious...

Nags head is a good area as you can go to the Oregon inlet bridge and fish off the cat walk its free or shore there then of course if you have 4 wheel drive your choices are endless as you can drive on the beach in many areas on Hatteras

My choice for pier fishing is the Hatteras pier in Frisco , there are lots of houses close by so look in the Frisco or Buxton area or Hatteras village too. Here is a site you might like if your first timers to the Outer Banks a nice section on fishing for new comers too.

Hatteras is about another hour beyond Nags Head, and to get to Ocracoke you catch a ferry from Hatteras (45min. ferry ride). I grew up in Tappahannock and I think it took us about 5 hours to get to Ocracoke, and around 3 to 3 1/2 to get to Nags Head, depending on tunnel traffic.

We like Ocracoke because the beaches are 4wd beaches, so drive out find your spot, easy to enjoy the beach and watch the guys fish. But there are no houses on the beach or within walking distance. They are all around the ';village';. Ocracoke gets busy, but it is alot different from what you will find in Nags Head. A lot more laid back, quaint and quiet.

Hatteras does have houses on the beach and is still pretty quiet, compared to Nags Head. Hatteras has 4WD beaches too.

Also I checked on the NC fishing laws and the guys may be all right if fishing from a pier. Piers have the option of buying a blanket fishing license, similar to fishing charters. If they are going to surf fish they have to purchase the license, $10.

Oh yea def. check out Fish_OINC%26#39;s website, lots of great info!

Hi there! My crew spends the entire time fishing also. We vacation every summer at OBX. It never seems crazy crowded to me. My husband and son fish at the avalon pier alot. They go to nags head pier quite often also. It is not crowded. It is located at MP 12. They have a nice restaurant there. You can also have them cook what you catch. There are rental homes and I think a hotel by it. It is nice also. I don%26#39;t know if you can list a link on here but you can do a search for Avalon (mile post 6.5- 7) and for Nags head pier. Both are nice. We also go crabbing over on the sound side. Maybe they would like that. Mine measure them and bring them home to eat. There is also a pier at mile post 18 in nags head. We never go down that far though. Hope this helps you. Good luck.
