I will be visiting NC in February. We purchased super cheaps airline tickets on ';SkyBus'; $10 each way Chicopee,MA to Greensboro. We are trying to decide what to do. We dont know if we should visit Raleigh-Durham,Winston-Salem,Charolotte or rent a cabin near the Blueridge parkway. What do you guys recommend?
City or Mountains????
It depends. Do you want a nice quite relaxing stay or do you what to go out and do something different everyday?
Go to the mountains you will have a nice relaxing trip but still be able to go out if you wanted.
Staying in the city isn%26#39;t as quite as the country.
City or Mountains????
Can%26#39;t answer without knowing the length of your stay - how long will you be here?
I will be staying 2 nights...It will be two couples with 5 kids total so i thought staying in a cabin would be best for the kids. I would like to go out to a good restaurant and see a few interesting things.
If you want a mountain cabin that will accommodate that many, your best bet is to go on a site such as vrbo.com and look either around Asheville ( you can hit I-40...about 3 hours or so from G%26#39;Boro) or you can take highway 52 up to around Hillsville/Fancy Gap Va area along the Blue Ridge Parkway. That%26#39;s a little shorter drive. The HWY 52 route will take you through the real Mayberry - Mount Airy- boyhood home of Andy Griffith. The one variable coming in February is snow and ice. They will close the Parkway on sections that become treacherous.
Another attraction close by G%26#39;Boro is Old Salem in Winston-Salem. It%26#39;s a restored Moravian Colonial Town - mini-Williamsburg.
Want some old timey mountain music? Not sure what nights you%26#39;ll be here, but the Rex Theater in Galax, VA has a Bluegrass show each Friday night - it%26#39;s a live radio show and it%26#39;s usually free. On Saturday nights the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA has Old Time Music and dancing- $5.00 a head ( this is the famous Carter Family that started country music).
Now- if restaurants are important you%26#39;ll want to be around Asheville - more choices. Also in Asheville is the Biltmore House - the home of George Vanderbilt - it is THE tourist attraction in town. Or there%26#39;s lots more to do in the area, but it%26#39;s the biggest draw.
Just a few ideas...more will come as others drop by. Best wishes.
For a 2 night stay I%26#39;d rent a cabin in the Asheville area and visit the Biltmore House. It%26#39;s an easy drive up I-40, and Asheville has a lot to offer. You should easily be able to find a nice cabin that will accommodate all of you comfortably, and the Biltmore is a must-see.
Have fun!
Hands down, go to Asheville. See the Biltmore House (its pricey, but something you and the kids will never forget). Head over to the Asheville forum for ideas. Driving time is 3 hours straight down I-40, so it is interstate the whole way.
If you go to the Asheville area, and do rent a cabin, avoid Blue Ridge Vaction Cabins. rented from them in October and had a terrible experience. Owner is rude, and difficult to deal with.
