Loop trip

I have a 5 day trip in Feb.Looking for a good loop starting and ending in Winston-Salem and including Ashville.It%26#39;s my wife and 7 and 10 year old kids.We like outdoor or indoor fun/adventure activities and good local restaraunts. Thanks for any help.

Loop trip

I would head west from Winston-Salem toward Boone. Then, head to Grandfather Mountain. Then, down to Asheville. Also, you could include Chimney Rock in your Asheville visit.

Loop trip

You must be flying in on Skybus(?). Visit Old Salem in Winston-Salem ( either first or last on your loop). It%26#39;s a restored Colonial Moravian town ( mini-Williamsburg).

Go up Highway 52 to Mt Airy, NC. It%26#39;s a great drive - you can stop at Pinnacle ( Pilot Mountain) for great hiking.

Go on up 52 to Mt.Airy - the home of Andy Griffith. It%26#39;s the REAL Mayberry - lots of neat shop downtown. Eat a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch. If you are there on a weekend you might catch some kind of performance at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. On Saturday mornings there is a live bluegrass radio show at the theater downtown.

Go on up 52 to Fancy Gap , Va and hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and head south. Pick up a parkway map and you%26#39;ll see a zillion cool stops you can make along the way. Old cabins, hiking trails, restored homesites, etc....

Stop in Boone/Blowing Rock - if it%26#39;s cold you ski at one of the many ski resorts there. Good restaurants there too - Daniel Boone Inn is a standard with it%26#39;s family style country dining. There%26#39;s also snow tubing, etc....

Grandfather Mtn. can be a fun stop but in February it can be below zero up there with 80 mile an hour winds so dress for it!.

Once you get to Asheville, there are plenty of tourist guides for stuff to see and do. Just south of there is the Pisgah National Forest in Brevard- visit the Cradle of Forestry - the center is designed for kids your age!

After your mountain trek you can either hit I-40 and go back to W-S or take 74 into Charlotte and back I-85. IF you want to see the city and experience the traffic! LOL.

Just a few thoughts - best wishes.
