Asheville Best Route

Will be traveling to Asheville In February and driving from Charlotte(really save $$ flying into CLT)

Was thinking of scenic route 74 via shelby to Lake lure and to Asheville. What are the roads like and what is a good scenic drive instead of Route 40

Asheville Best Route

wow, I wouldn%26#39;t take that route for two reasons....VERY winding and would take you much longer. From Charlotte to Asheville is normally just under 2 hrs and if you went on 74 it would take over 3 hrs. Besides that, Feb weather can be iffy...icy roads and slippery conditions could make this a dangerous option. There are lots of scenic routes around Asheville - wait til you get here but don%26#39;t waste time driving on them in the winter in Feb. before you get here.

Also, there won%26#39;t be much to see that time of year in terms of foliage.

Asheville Best Route

Just 77 north to 40 west is your best bet! Save your ';site-seeing'; time for the Biltmore!

Thanks I will do as you sauggest-- If weather is good would this be scenic even thoufh it takes an extra hour?

it is much prettier in the fall or spring/summer when foliage/flowers are out. It is not just 1/2 hr difference - it is more like 1-1.5 hr difference.

Been traveling to A%26#39;Ville from Charlotte for 50 years. We always go 85 to Gastonia, take 321 north to 40 and on into A%26#39;ville. That%26#39;s the best route. Best wishes.

I%26#39;m with you Bud! Been taking that route for only 20 years myself, LOL. Charlotte -%26gt; Asheville not really scenic. Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway for scenery, but ummm, maybe in the spring or fall would be better! :-)

Will there be snow on Route 40 .Blue Ridge Pkwy??

Many parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway often remain closed during a winter season. The below listed sections were closed on Friday and probably will stay closed for three months or even longer due to snow and ice. Because of limited founds for this national scenic road there is no snow removal or any weather related maintenance in a winter. It is a great time to take long walks along these sections of the parkway since there are no cars or motorcycles to worry about. Just drive to a gate, park your car off the pavement and take a long (or short) walk.

We always I-85, then route 74 via Shelby but continue west all the way to junction with I-26 west. Great scenic route and very light traffic. I wouldn%26#39;t dare to take 74A through Lake Lure in the winter. This is a very nice approach to Asheville and it takes only slightly longer than 2 hours. Personally, we have a good excuse to get off at Saluda exit for a great lunch or dinner in Purple Onion. I prefer this route because a truck traffic on I-40 in NC and TN is crazy and highway is in a terrible shape. Last spring we drove all the way to CA on I-40 and, sadly, I have to report that I-40 in NC is in a very bad shape as compare to several other states

Thanks Places sounds like a good route

Whars so specialabout Purple Onion in Saluda?

Alsowas thinking about taking some scenic drivesaround asheville. Diilsboro, Waynesville, Brevard Will this be closed on Parkway . How about Aheville to 276 to Brevard Seems like snow everywhere in February?
