NC Beach Sand Quality

We had a great vacation in Emerald Isle, NC in 2001. Shortly thereafter, that beach and several others were ';refurbished'; with sand that was very rough and hard to walk on in bare feet. Has nature repaired the problem? Has anyone walked on the beach in Emerald Isle recently? Was the sand nice and soft? What about other NC beaches - how are they faring as far as sand quality?

NC Beach Sand Quality

I like the sandy beaches of Southern Topsail Island over Emerald Isle. The problem at Emerald Isle is the shells, if you can get out past the shells the sand gets a lot better. Topsail has nice sandy beaches, and is only about 30 min. from Wilmington.

I personally love the beaches of Ocracoke Island, 4WD beaches, you go out find your spot and spend the whole day. Nice sandy beaches. The only way to get to Ocracoke is by ferry, which keeps Ocracoke a nice quaint village, no McDonalds, putt putts, or other stuff like that.

I have heard the beaches at Sunset and Holden Beach (Brunswick Co. NC) are nice as well, but I have never gone to Southern NC.

Do you mean the broken shells from the sand that was pumped in for the refurbishing Emerald Isle are still a problem? I heard right after it was done you couldn%26#39;t walk on the beach in bare feet. If that%26#39;s still true I%26#39;ll go elsewhere! Has anyone attempted to walk on the beach at Emerald Isle in bare feet lately?

Those are the very shells. The shells are mostly bad around the waterline when you are trying to get into the water.
